A Little More About Gestalt Therapy: foundations and method
Gestalt therapy was developed in the 1950s by Fritz Perls, Paul Goodman, and Ralf Hefferline. It is based on psychoanalysis, research in experimental psychology (theories of form), and phenomenological philosophy and the social dimension of existence.
Rather than analyzing the individual, the focus is on finding ways to live more fully in harmony with one’s own needs, desires, and others. This becomes possible through the relationship of trust that develops between patient and therapist. Over the course of the sessions, the patient realizes their potential and regains the freedom to shape their own life.
The areas of focus include issues related to personal roadblocks, support, and psychological counseling, relationship therapy, existential—for anyone seeking to regain their full vitality.
The key concepts of Gestalt therapy are: contact, the here-and-now, process, awareness, and unity.
